HISTORY:
the year was 1643 and carlisle was twenty three years old. it was a time of great political and religious upheaval in england, and his father (an anglican pastor) often led witch, vampire, and werewolf hunts, claiming they were riding the world of sin and evil. most of the time they were mistaken, though, and killed many innocent citizens. carlisle took over the hunts as he father grew old, but was less keen to engage in the killings. during one of the hunts when he discovered a vampiric coven in the london sewers he was attacked, and left bleeding in the street. during the painful and horrific transformation he hid in a potato cellar, knowing what his father would do. several times he attempted to kill himself, including starvation, drowning, and jumping off cliffs. it came to a point that he was so desperate for blood that he killed deer from a passing herd and realized it was far more humane that drinking human blood.

he soon met the ancient volturi coven who tried to convert his ways to human blood. he strongly stood against them, and left. it was then he began to study medicine, and over time grew into a very experienced physician. he then moved to the united states and took up the night shifts at a chicago hospital during the spanish influenza epidemic. a dying mother named elizabeth masen was one of his patients, who begged for him to do anything in his power to help her son, edward. he felt compelled to help the boy, and after centuries of loneliness he transformed him into a vampire.

soon after in 1921, carlisle and edward moved to wisconsin where carlisle treated esme for a broken leg. she was only sixteen at the time but she showed a strong sense of attraction towards carlisle who desperatly hid his own in return. several years later he confronted esme again, except this time she was very ill and near death after jumping off a cliff. her newborn had died and she no longer felt as if she needed to live. unable to let her die, carlisle also changed her. they quickly fell in love and married.

carlisle then turned rosalie hale, a young woman who had been raped and almost killed by her drunken fiancé and his friends, who then left her in the street to die. his main hopes would be that edward would take her for a mate, but he had guessed wrong and they only showed signs of sibling affection. later on while rosalie was hunting she found a man named emmett who had been mauled by a bear and left for dead. desperate to save his life she carried him over one hundred miles to carlisle to be changed. they too soon fell in love and married (though carlisle and esme kicked them out several times after destroying several houses they had bought for them).

around the year 1950 alice and jasper joined his coven. the pair had met in philadelphia, and based on one of alice's visions they ventured to the cullens for support. they quickly adapted to the family and then moved to forks, washington where they had long before lived and made a treaty with the quileute tribe, led by shape-shifter ephraim black.
